Allergy-Friendly Pets

Reviewed by: Marc J. Sicklick, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI

Allergy-Free PetIf you’re allergic to dander but you still want a pet to call your own, try one of these allergy-friendly pets:

  • Fish. Yes, you once won a goldfish at the fair, and it died. Try again. Keeping fish, especially tropical fish, can be a beautiful and rewarding hobby.

  • Reptiles. They may not be cuddly but reptiles can be fascinating. Lizards (geckos, iguanas) often have personalities that rival a cat’s. Some snakes like the ball python are renowned for their mild-mannered temperaments. Just be sure that you know what you’re getting yourself into: A baby iguana looks cute, but when it grows to four feet long, it can be a handful. Or two.

  • Amphibians. Want something more responsive than a fish, less scaly than a reptile? Frogs and salamanders make easy-to-care for and interesting pets.
