Everything You Didn't Want to Know About Cockroaches

Reviewed by: Marc J. Sicklick, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI

Cockroach AllergiesAs if you needed another reason to hate cockroaches! Allergies to cockroach debris—their skin, feces and saliva—is one of the most common indoor allergies, especially in cities.

If you or your children have persistent allergy symptoms such as itchy skin or itchy eyes—or asthma—visit your physician or allergist to get tested for cockroach allergies.

These large, oval-shaped household insects are difficult to get rid of once they’ve made your house their home. But it can be done. And if you’re allergic to them, it should be a top priority. Here are some tips that will help:

  • Clean your countertops regularly and never leave food out.

  • Make sure all food in your pantry is sealed in air-tight containers.

  • Be vigilant: If you see even one cockroach scuttling away from the kitchen light, assume hundreds of his friends are hiding behind cabinets, inside walls or under the sink.

  • Consider the help of a professional pest exterminator. Roaches are notoriously difficult to get rid of.

  • Speak with your allergist about ways to manage your symptoms. He or she may suggest antihistamine nasal sprays, inhalers or even allergy shots.
