Am I Eating Dinner Too Late?

By:
Lynn Grieger

Question :

How late is too late to eat dinner? Does it really affect your weight the later you eat? --T.J.

Answer :

I don't believe that there is one cut-off time for dinner. Most of the time when you hear things like "no eating after 7pm," it's designed to cut down on late-night snacking. Eating dinner late does pose problems: If there's a lot of time between lunch and dinner we might find ourselves snacking too much or tending to overeat at supper.

I encourage people to eat the majority of their calories when they are the most active. If you're very active in the evening, then eating a late, larger dinner might make sense. For me, I'm busiest and most physically active in the morning and afternoon. Breakfast and lunch are my big meals, and I tend to eat a lighter dinner. Instead of getting hung up on the time you eat, look at the rest of your day and your meals.
