Anti-inflammatory drugs are among the most popular methods Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is caused by joint cartilage deterioration.of treating pain related to many conditions that range from osteoarthritis to headaches. These drugs are also used to reduce fever in many patients.

Anti-inflammatory drugs are available in over-the-counter and prescription form. They include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Over-the-counter and prescription medications that include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and COX-2 inhibitors.

  • Corticosteroids. Steroidal medications available by prescription or in some forms without a prescription. They include drugs such as prednisone and hydrocortisone.

Anti-inflammatory drugs can bring relief to patients suffering from many types of pain. However, these medications also can cause side effects that range from minor to potentially life-threatening. Patients are advised not to take anti-inflammatory drugs without first consulting a physician.
