Are My Clitoris & Labia Too Big?By: Question : I'm 15 and still a virgin, but my clitoris and labia minora are bigger and more prominent than everyone else's. It makes me feel self-conscious in a bathing suit. Is there anything I can do? J.D. Answer : You should see a gynecologist. More than likely, your clitoris and labia fall within the range of normal, but there are some conditions that can cause the labia and clitoris to be larger than average. The average width of the clitoris is 3-4mm (about one-eighth inch); anything greater in diameter than 10mm (about three-eights inch) is considered large. One condition that causes the clitoris to be enlarged is called congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This condition usually is apparent at birth, because the genitals of an affected child are ambiguous, not clearly female or male. Early development of pubic hair can occur -- as early as age two! Facial hair is prominent as well. Because there is often associated high blood pressure, this condition is usually diagnosed shortly after birth and is not likely to be what is affecting you at age 15. There is, however, a late-onset version of adrenal hyperplasia, with generally milder symptoms. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is another condition that can lead to growth and enlargement of the clitoris, as well as excess hair growth. It begins after puberty and is due to lack of ovulation and abnormal levels of androgens (male hormones). Treatment can be effective, and usually consists of birth control pills.
