Signs and symptoms of bird flu

Physicians continue to learn about how bird flu impacts the human body. More is understood with each new outbreak. The incubation period of the disease is likely one to five days, but it may take as long as eight days for symptoms to develop. Signs and symptoms often resemble those of typical flu and may include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Abdominal and chest pain

Other signs and symptoms have also occurred in patients infected with bird flu. These include:

  • Conjunctivitis (eye infection)
  • Pneumonia
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Lymphopenia (low level of a specific type of white blood cell)

Symptoms of bird flu may become severe and lead to life-threatening complications. As the disease progresses it may cause damage to the lower lungs, which can lead to respiratory failure.
