Questions for your doctor about brain tumors

Preparing questions in advance can help patients have more meaningful discussions with their physicians regarding their conditions. Patients may wish to ask their doctor the following questions about brain tumors:

  1. How do I know if my symptoms are related to a brain tumor or a less serious condition?

  2. What tests will be used to diagnose my brain tumor?

  3. How will you know if I have a primary or secondary brain tumor?

  4. If it is secondary, how can you determine where my cancer started?

  5. Will I need a brain biopsy? If so, how will it be completed?

  6. What is the grade of my tumor?

  7. Will I need surgery to remove the tumor? If so, which type?

  8. What medical conditions might result from the surgery?

  9. What other treatments might be necessary?

  10. What are the risks and benefits of these treatments?

  11. What can I expect in terms of recovery?

  12. How will I know if my cancer has spread to other areas?

  13. What are the chances my cancer will return?

  14. What is my prognosis based on my type and grade of cancer?

  15. Can you recommend a support group for brain cancer patients and their families?
