Breast Feeding: Nursing while PregnantBy: Question : I just had a baby six months ago and am nursing him. I think I may be pregnant again. Is it still okay to nurse him while I'm pregnant? --Cathy Answer : Yes, although it can be difficult for you to provide enough nutrition for yourself, a nursing baby and a growing baby inside you. But if you are extremely motivated, take a multivitamin, eat very healthy, drink lots of fluids and get extra rest, you can do it. Many women find their milk supply begins to dry up if they get pregnant again while still nursing; they just can't keep up with all the extra demands. Also, many nursing babies begin to reject the breast milk -- there may be differences in taste that encourage weaning. You should see your obstetrician or midwife right away. Two pregnancies in a 12-month period can increase the chances of pregnancy complications, especially preterm labor and low birthweight. You may be asked to have more frequent visits and to get more rest.
