Breasts: How Does a Bra Work?By:
Would you be able to give me a basic outline of what a bra does? How does it work? What do the different parts do? How do I find a good fit and support?
Emma
Basically, a bra keeps us from jiggling. It provides support to the breasts and may help prevent sagging as well as back pain. The cups hold the breasts. The chest band keeps the bra from sliding up, and the straps distribute the weight across the shoulders and upper back. "Cross your heart" bras lift and separate the breasts. Padding can enhance shape, or in the case of "WonderBras," push the breasts in a bit to produce cleavage. Bras also provide modesty, especially when wearing knits or thin fabrics. Bras do not cause or prevent breast cancer.
For advice on proper fit, go to your local department store. Many large stores have specially trained sales people in the lingerie department who can help you find the bra best suited to your shape and needs.
