Can Herpes Cause Painful Defecation?By:
I need to find out why it is really painful for me to pass my stools. Could this somehow be related to my genital herpes?
N.K.
There are several possible reasons for pain during defecation. In many cases, hard stools are the cause of the pain. Often, passing a hard stool may cause a small tear in the lining of the anal canal, a condition called anal fissure. The fissure may heal slowly because of repeated injury with each bowel movement. Drinking more water or taking medications to soften your stools may help, as may using anti-inflammatory creams to reduce anal swelling. Another cause of painful defecation can be an abscess in the soft tissues surrounding the rectum and anus. The therapy for such a problem is surgical drainage of the abscess. Hemorrhoids, which are enlarged veins, can also cause painful defecation if a blood clot has formed (thrombosed) within them. The therapy for a thrombosed hemorrhoid is surgical removal.
To answer your specific question, genital herpes can sometimes make it painful to pass stools. If the source of your discomfort is indeed a herpes infection, fluid-filled vesicles will most likely be present in the area around the anus. However, it is important to remember that tumors and other serious problems deep in the anal canal and even in the lower rectum can also cause painful bowel movements. So, if your discomfort persists, you should see a gastroenterologist for a full evaluation.
