Cataracts usually develop slowly and painlessly. In some cases, cataracts can develop in an individual who has glaucoma, which can be a painful condition. Physical changes in the eye are generally not apparent, but cataracts have many other indicators. These include:

  • Cloudy, blurry, fuzzy, filmy, or dull vision

  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare

  • Poor night vision

  • Double vision or multiple images in one eye

  • Seeing halos around lights

  • Fading perception of colors

  • Difficulty distinguishing blues from purples

  • Eyestrain

  • Needing brighter lights for reading, sewing and other close activities

  • Needing frequent changes in prescription glasses or contact lenses

  • Increased blinking
