Cervical Health: Did Pelvic Surgery Cause the Loss of Sensation?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

I had a cervical polyp removed two months ago. Though the lab biopsy of the polyp was fine, I can't feel my pelvic muscles (used to stop/start urination) anymore. I seem to have lost sensation when I try to use these muscles. My sexual pleasure is greatly diminished. Is it possible that I suffered nerve damage during the polyp removal? If so, will I ever get the feeling back?

Rose

Answer :

It is highly unlikely you suffered nerve damage from the polyp removal. The nerves to the cervix are not the same as the nerves to the pelvic floor muscles, so disruption of a nerve from the polyp removal will not affect your pelvic muscles.

One possibility is that the pressure from the speculum in your vagina while the polyp was being removed caused some temporary damage to the pelvic floor, the same way pressure from a baby's head during a vaginal delivery may. If that is the case, sensation and function should return. You should mention this to your gynecologist and ask exactly what was done during the polyp removal. I have removed many cervical polyps of all sizes and have never had a patient complain of lack of sensation afterwards.
