Mary Ellen Luchetti, M.D., AAD

Summary

Chafing is a continuous rubbing of the skin that causes redness or soreness, often from walking, running, bicycling or other activities. Areas prone to chafing include the thighs, groin, underarms, nipples and buttocks.

People can take several steps to help prevent chafing or to treat it once it has occurred. These include applying jellies, powders or ointments to chafed skin, wearing certain types of clothing and avoiding certain activities.

Chafed skin should be washed with soap and cool-to-lukewarm water. An antiseptic solution should be applied to the site before it is covered with a sterile gauze pad that allows the wound to breathe.
