Check Your Neck

Reviewed by:  Dr. Robert Cooper, M.D., FACE

Catching thyroid disease early can avoid uncomfortable symptoms and dangerous health complications. Though you have to see a doctor for blood tests and diagnostic scans, you can do a thyroid self-exam at home — all you need is a mirror and some water!

Step OneStep One
Stand in front of a mirror or hold a handheld mirror in front of you. You need to be able to see your neck clearly. Focus on the area between your Adam’s apple and your collarbone, which is where your thyroid gland is located.

Step TwoStep Two
Tilt your head back so that your chin is pointed upwards. Make sure you can see the area on your neck between your Adam’s apple and collarbone.

Step ThreeStep Three
Drink some water. While you swallow, pay attention to this area. Look for anything unusual, such as a lump or bulge (but not your Adam’s apple — you’re looking lower than that). You may want to repeat this step a few times to make sure you’re not missing anything.

Step FourStep Four
Drink some more water. This time, feel the area between your Adam’s apple and your collarbone as you swallow. After you've swallowed, continue to feel this area of your neck for any lumps or bulges.

Step FiveStep Five
If everything feels normal, you’re done! However, if you noticed any enlargements, lumps or bulges around your thyroid gland, see a doctor. It may not be anything serious, but it could indicate thyroid disease or even cancer. Your doctor will be able to make a diagnosis and start you on any treatment that might be necessary.
