Childbirth: Should I Fast During Labor?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

I am going to have my first baby next month. I heard that I should be fasting during labor. I also know that many hours (up to 24 hours) may elapse before the cervix dilates and I deliver. I don?t think I can stand such a long period of fasting. Won't this make me exhausted at the actual delivery when it is important to have full power and energy?

Answer :

Congratulations! Actually, prolonged fasting is probably not necessary during labor. The reason we want your stomach relatively empty is to prevent complications from anesthesia should a cesarean section become necessary. It is okay, however, to drink fluids and have things like ice pops, gelatin and broth throughout labor. Earlier on, before you are in active labor, light foods (soup, toast, plain pasta, etc.) are fine. A pizza right before you leave for the hospital is probably NOT a good idea!

Labor is hard work, and it is important to stay well hydrated throughout. Most likely you will not be hungry once the contractions really kick in and you are making progress, but be sure to sip liquids. Once you are pushing, ice chips to wet your mouth are all you will need.
