Clomid for an Ovulating Woman?

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I'm ovulating, but I still haven't been able to conceive, and my doctors don't know why. Would Clomid increase my chances of getting pregnant?

Debra

Answer :

While many physicians recommend clomiphene (Clomid, Serophene) for patients with unexplained infertility, studies have repeatedly shown that there is no improvement in fertility resulting from such treatment. In fact, prolonged clomiphene therapy can result in diminished fertility due to Clomid's anti-estrogen effect; this can result in thickened cervical mucus, which inhibits sperm entry into the uterus, as well as thinning of the uterine lining, which can prevent implantation.

In my opinion, the use of clomiphene alone when the cause for infertility is unknown only delays proper evaluation and effective treatment.
