Clomid, IVF & Mood Changes

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

Does Clomid produce anger or mood changes? During the mid-phase of IVF, my husband and I lost all communication, and I stopped the IVF therapy. I was very angry and very sad. Is this normal?

Kelly

Answer :

Clomiphene is an antiestrogen. By blocking the effects of estrogen, clomiphene can cause mood changes. Plus, IVF is associated with higher-than-normal levels of estrogen, and high levels of estrogen can also can mood swings.

A significant proportion of IVF patients experience mood disturbances, but not all these effects are due to hormonal changes. The stress associated with fertility treatment may also result in mood changes. If you find that treatment is affecting your relationship, I would definitely recommend you consider counseling to make sure you and your partner stay on track.
