Condoms: How Can I Cope With a Latex or Spermicide Sensitivity?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

Since my son's birth and until my husband's vasectomy next month, we are using condoms as birth control. I have noticed that the day after, I have a swelling, burning and itching sensation. Could I be allergic to latex? Could it be the lubricants on the condom? Do you have any suggestions on what we could use in the meantime?

-- Keri

Answer :

What you describe could be either a latex or a spermicide sensitivity. I suggest as a first step using unlubricated, spermicide-free latex condoms. If you still experience irritation, then try the non-latex lambskin condoms.

It is important to continue using condoms until your husband is tested again after his vasectomy; all the sperm that are in front of where his vas deferens tubes are blocked off could still get you pregnant! A man must have a semen analysis showing no sperm in his ejaculate before he is considered sterile and before it is safe to have intercourse without protection.
