Questions for your doctor

Preparing questions in advance can help patients have more meaningful discussions with their physicians regarding their conditions. Patients may wish to ask their doctor the following questions about diabetes and women:

  1. Do I have or am I at risk of developing diabetes?
  2. What sort of diagnostic testing might I have to undergo?
  3. How often should I have these tests?
  4. What do my test results show? Is more testing needed?
  5. What are my target ranges for glucose and glycohemoglobin?
  6. What are my treatment options, and which do you recommend?
  7. Do I also need to control my blood pressure, cholesterol or anything else?
  8. What exercises should I do, and are there any I should avoid?
  9. What sort of diet should I follow? Do you recommend I see a dietitian?
  10. What monitoring tests will I need to have, and how often?
  11. How can diabetes affect my menstrual cycle?
  12. How can diabetes affect my sexual health?
  13. Are there ways I can avoid yeast infections?
  14. Does diabetes increase my risk of osteoporosis, fractures or other bone problems?
  15. Will it be safe for me to have a baby?
  16. What affect could my diabetes have on a pregnancy and on my baby?
  17. What lifestyle changes can I make to reduce the risk of diabetes or diabetic complications in myself, my children and my husband?
