Golf AccessoriesBy: Jonny Bowden Think about this: When you play golf you are likely to walk for about four miles up and down hills on fairly rough, and often wet and muddy, terrain. Spiked shoes are a must because they provide a nonslip base when you are swinging on spongy ground. They also secure a firmer foothold than pebble-soled or ribbed shoes that creates the proper body-weight transfer needed in your swing. A glove is for grip; it should fit you like a second skin. Its purpose is to improve adhesion between your hand and the handle of the club. Choose thin leather gloves. Before you buy, make sure that the gloves are resistant to shrinkage from perspiration and rain showers. They may be hand-washable. Once the leather stretches and the glove becomes loose, you must replace it. In cold playing conditions, warm hands are essential. In such weather, when you aren't playing a shot, wear nylon-fiber mittens to keep your hands warm and dry, and switch to gloves when playing the shots. Always be prepared for wet weather. Carry a lightweight waterproof jacket and pull-on pants in your bag. Make sure that the fit allows you to make a full, unencumbered swing. Choose lightweight synthetic fabrics that stop water from seeping in while letting perspiration out. And always drip-dry your rain gear after each game to make it last much longer.
While we're on the subject of inclement weather, remember the safety rules for lightning: If you're caught in a thunderstorm, do not seek shelter under trees. Instead, head for a bunker. Avoid using a steel-shafted umbrella, because it could conduct the lightning. Fiberglass models are safest. page 1 of 2 | Next Page
