How Do I Prepare for a Marathon?

By:
Nadya Swedan

Question :

I have recently decided that I am going to train to run a marathon in June. I have never been a runner -- ever. Is this a smart thing to do? I always thought that running was part of your DNA make-up, i.e., it came naturally to some people. Can anyone give me tips on how to start training? I will be training with a certified coach. Is eight months long enough to train?

Answer :

Running a marathon is a microcosm of life -- highs and lows, ups and downs, itty-bitty steps and leaps forward. You do not say what your present fitness level is -- or what sport activities you now engage in. Assuming that you are already in tremendous shape -- let me give you my two cents about running your first marathon -- from the head up!

I have worked with many marathoners, some first-timers. I have also been there myself. It is a wonderful, fulfilling accomplishment -- but it is also very grueling, both physically and mentally. How long a runner trains for that first marathon determines the quality of the experience. Certainly, you want to enjoy your adventure. The great majority of entrants in a marathon do finish the race. But you want to cross that finish line in good condition.

It is a smart thing to set challenges and goals for yourself. Life is all about taking risks. You sound like you have a good basis of self-confidence. That will surely come in handy (around mile 20). My advice to you is to prepare yourself mentally throughout your training. This way, it will all be second nature to you on race day. In other words, train your mind along with your body.

And if you do not feel ready in June, wait until you are. "There's always another train." A wonderful resource for me was Gordon Bakoulis's book, How to Train for and Run Your Best Marathon.
