How do I start a diet?By:
Hi, I am struggling to find a diet that will lead me to healthier eating on a budget. Aside from cutting out foods that are processed and high in sugar, I am having trouble planning menus and finding good foods.
I don't know where to start. I am 5'1" and weigh about 200 pounds, and am not happy about it. I really want to start eating better, and feel healthier but haven't figured out where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Hi Klarissa,
Congratulations for taking the first step towards a healthier lifestyle! Here are some quick simple tips to help you get started:
1. Use the food pyramid as your guide. Check out Easy Ways to Scale the Food Pyramid for more information on the food pyramid and how to use it to plan meals and snacks.
2. Use our Recipe Finder to find low-fat, healthy menu ideas. Try to use at least one new recipe each week.
3. Pay attention to when you are hungry and when you are full. Try to eat only when hungry (not when you are tired, bored or angry.)
4. Try to stop eating before you become full. That may mean leaving food on your plate.
5. Keep a record of everything you eat and drink. By writing everything down in a journal, you'll probably lose weight. In addition, you'll figure out where you want to make changes.
6. Make sure you eat three meals each day. It is next to impossible to lose weight while skipping meals.
7. Keep coming here for more great ideas!
Keep me posted on your progress!
Take care,
