Question :
"I walk on a daily basis and I've noticed that my shins burn and hurt until I am warmed up. Could it be the shoes I'm wearing? Or am I not walking properly? I would like to get rid of this problem so I can enjoy walking more!" --Julia C.
Answer :
This is a common complaint among walkers. Here are a few things you can try doing prior to your walk to eliminate discomfort:
- Apply ice to your shins for five minutes to increase circulation.
- Lie on your back with your feet in the air or push into a yoga shoulder stand. Hold this position for 30 seconds and then stand up. When you stand up, the blood will rush to your lower extremities and flush that area.
- Lie down on your back and bend your left leg while extending your right leg to the ceiling. Draw the letters of an imaginary alphabet with your right foot. Exaggerate the letters and you will feel your leg muscles warming up. You will also strengthen the muscles in the front of your leg. Repeat to the other side.
