Locker Room EtiquetteBy: Jessica Hulett As in life, there are people who go to the gym and seemingly forget about common courtesy. Their grunting makes others uncomfortable. Their sweat glistens all over the weight machines. They are the scourge of fitness, and they behave no better in the locker room. In the locker room, we are all vulnerable. We're at the gym to improve the way we look and feel, and then we have to disrobe in front of strangers. (Cruel, isn't it?) If everyone behaved with the proper amount of decorum and obeyed the following rules, the gym ‑- and, really, the world ‑- would be a better place. Rule #1: You are not posing for Playboy. Once you've exited the shower, there is no reason for you to remain naked. Wrap a towel around yourself. Get dressed. Do not put one leg up on a bench to dry off your feet in a crowded locker room. Do not use the hair dryer to dry the hair on your head while naked, and that goes triple for any hair you may want to dry elsewhere. If your locker room has a sauna and/or steam room, cover yourself up before you go in. If you can't bear to cover up, at least put a towel down before you sit ‑- for your own safety, as well as the safety and general comfort level of those who come after you.
