Low-Cal, Low-Carb Cocktail Recipes

By: Sabrina Rojas Weiss

A hangover may be the least of your worries after a night on the town. Your cocktail of choice might be loaded with calories and carbs, making happy hour a lot less happy. Party smart instead with one of our tasty, diet-friendly cocktails.

Not Your Granny's Apple Tea

You don't have to sneak your liquor into mugs, but on a chilly winter evening, you might want to with this low-cal twist on the old-fashioned hot toddy.

6 ounces cinnamon apple spice tea, like Celestial Seasonings
1 ounce dark rum
Sugar substitute to taste
Lemon twist

Brew tea and pour into your favorite mug. Add rum, sugar substitute and lemon twist.

The Invisible Orange

The screwdrivers of your youth are full of sugar, too filling and so '87. Get a more sophisticated orange flavor with this citrusy highball. Too bad there's not much vitamin C in here to protect you through cold season.

1 1/2 ounce orange-flavored vodka, like Absolut Mandrin, Stoli Ohranj or Smirnoff Orange Twist
1/4 ounce triple sec
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
1/4 ounce simple syrup (made with sugar substitute)*
4 ounces diet tonic water
Slice of orange for garnish

* To make simple syrup: In a small plastic bottle, combine 1 part sugar substitute to 2 parts water and shake until dissolved.

Combine vodka, triple sec, lime juice, simple syrup and tonic water in a highball glass with ice. Add orange slice.

Moscow Pony

Back during World War II, no one in the country was drinking vodka until a clever bartender came up with the Moscow Mule. We traded the Mule's too-sweet ginger beer for ginger tea, which has all of the zing and none of the sugar.

6 ounces iced ginger tea
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/4 ounce fresh lime juice
Simple syrup (made with sugar substitute)* to taste
Lime wedge for garnish

* To make simple syrup: In a small plastic bottle, combine 1 part sugar substitute to 2 parts water and shake until dissolved.

For the iced tea, you can use store-bought ginger tea bags, bottled unsweetened tea or your own strained-and-chilled brew of black tea with grated ginger and cinnamon. Combine with vodka, juice and simple syrup in a highball glass with ice. Garnish with lime wedge.
