Do I Need a Psychologist?By: Question : How do you know when you need to see a psychologist? I feel like I am not living in the present. R. Answer : One might benefit from seeing a psychologist for a number of reasons, most having to do with dissatisfaction or unhappiness with some aspect of one's life situation, emotional or physical state, or behavior. As for when someone NEEDS to see a psychologist or other therapist ... well, I'd certainly recommend it for individuals who are in danger of hurting themselves or others, or losing touch with reality. As far as the latter is concerned, I'll assume that your statement "I feel like I am not living in the present" does NOT mean you think you're living in 1792 or the like. Many people use such terminology to refer to feeling stuck in past wounds or regrets, or worrying so much about the future that they can't enjoy the present. (But if I'm wrong and you really, REALLY feel you're living in another time, then by all means check that out further in a face-to-face visit with a psychologist.) Seriously, though, feeling stuck in the past or constantly obsessing about the future can be a miserable way to live, and therapy may help. It might not hurt to schedule an appointment with a psychologist or other therapist to discuss your feelings -- and your questions -- further. Good luck.
