Does age affect symptoms of bipolar disorder?

I have found that every person is different with regards to how their illness plays out over their lifespan. For most people, the peak years for intensity of symptoms are the 20s through 40s. There are individuals whose symptoms do simmer down as they age. Yet I have also seen individuals who have active and ongoing symptoms even into their 70s and 80s. No one is sure why these patterns are more individual than universal.
