Does Interferon Interact with Methadone?By:
Can the drug interferon interact with methadone? I am in a very sticky situation.
M.
Interferon is a medication given as an injection just under the skin (usually three times a week) to treat chronic hepatitis infections. In the treatment of hepatitis C, addition of an oral antiviral medication (ribavirin) is essential to make the treatment more effective.
Although interferon is a good medication, it does cause significant side effects. Most patients will experience symptoms similar to those of a flulike illness. These include fatigue, muscle aches, headache and loss of appetite. In addition, patients may experience psychological changes such as anxiety, depression and irritability. Patients may also have problems with memory and concentration while taking interferon. In rare cases, a relapse of drug-abuse problems may occur while patients are taking interferon.
Methadone is a medication given as part of a detox program for narcotic abuse. Although there are no specific interactions between this drug and interferon, there may be problems with using these drugs simultaneously. People going through narcotic withdrawal may experience many of the same side effects associated with interferon. It is certainly possible that interferon use would aggravate these symptoms. Thus, detox may be made more difficult while someone is taking interferon.
