Does Treatment Use Up Eggs Faster?By: Question : Does going through fertility treatments, with all of the drugs involved to stimulate egg production, cause your egg reserve to diminish faster? Becky Answer : Nope! By the time your first menstrual period occurs, you have several hundred thousand eggs. Each month, a few thousand of these eggs enter the race to be the one chosen to ovulate. We don't know why a given egg will "decide" to give it a try in one month versus waiting until later. But there is only one egg winner (or, occasionally, two or more), and all the rest of that months' contenders degenerate. As you get closer to menopause, the number of eggs willing to give it a try each month diminishes, and ultimately at menopause, there are no eggs left to contend for the prize. Ovulation drugs do not affect the total number of eggs that enter each month's race. The drugs simply help a few more of the eggs reach the finish line. So don't worry -- the use of ovulation drugs will not result in an earlier menopause.
