Fish and mercury

You may not be a fan of raw fish. But recent tests showing high mercury levels at New York City sushi restaurants might have you wondering if even your tuna salad sandwich is safe.

All fish eaters, especially pregnant women, need to be aware of the concerns surrounding mercury and the recommended limits on fish. And as sushi grows in popularity, it’s crucial to pay attention to what’s on your plate.

  • Low-mercury fish like salmon, tilapia and canned light tuna are good sources of beneficial omega-3 acids.
  • Pregnant and nursing mothers shouldn’t eat more than 12 ounces of any fish per week.
  • Albacore tuna has slightly higher mercury levels, so children and nursing or pregnant women should keep a limit of 6 ounces per week.
  • Swordfish and shark are high in mercury, so avoid them completely.
