Egg Donation

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I am interested in learning more about egg donation. Who is eligible to be a donor? How is the procedure done? Where do you go if you want to be a donor? --Bobbie

Answer :

Criteria for selection as an egg donor and the tests involved are determined by the individual programs. Because the process involves frequent visits, you may be eligible to participate only in programs in your own community. Usually donors will have proven fertility, no health risks or family history of disease or birth defects. Many programs restrict egg donors to women under age 35. After completing a questionnaire, you will typically undergo a physical exam, blood testing and a psychological screening. If you pass the rigorous screening process, you may expect the egg stimulation and retrieval process to require about six to eight visits over a six-week period. I would advise you to contact your local IVF programs to see if they are recruiting donors.
