Encephalopathy CenterEncephalopathy refers to any disease of the brain that alters brain function or structure. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are rare and deadly brain disorders, including variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), which is caused by eating contaminated beef. It is sometimes called mad cow disease, although that term refers to the condition in cattle, not humans.
