Fatty LiverBy:
My doctor says that my tests show a fatty liver. What does this mean? Since I don't drink, should I be worried?
Alan
You have not indicated what tests you have had to be certain you have a fatty liver, but if you do, it means that excess fat has accumulated in your liver and replaced some normal tissue.
The most common reason for this is indeed alcohol use. However, fatty liver may occur in patients who are markedly overweight, have very high cholesterol, or have diabetes. There are some medications that may cause fatty liver (including seizure medications and some antibiotics that are rarely used today).
I don't believe you need to worry now, but you should be evaluated carefully to determine the cause. Weight loss, cholesterol reduction or control of diabetes, if any of these factors are involved, may prevent problems later on. If your primary-care provider isn't familiar with this area, a liver specialist can help.
