Finding a Good GastroenterologistBy:
I've had esophageal cramping for several years. Recently, I've developed the sensation that something is stuck in my throat all the time. I've mentioned it to my doctor, but he doesn't seem overly concerned. After reading your articles about people suffering from similar symptoms, I've decided to ask my doctor for a referral to a gastroenterologist. What characteristics should a patient look for in a good gastroenterologist?
H.
The complaint of "something stuck in my throat" is one that should be investigated by a doctor, and a referral to a gastroenterologist is certainly appropriate for this type of symptom. Finding a gastroenterologist should not require too much effort. There are many excellent gastroenterologists in most communities.
A good source of information is your own family or personal doctor. Since many gastroenterologists receive their patient referrals from family doctors, these doctors are often very aware of which specialists are best. Another potential source of information is your doctor's other patients who have seen certain gastroenterologists. They may give you some insight into a particular doctor's approach and attitude. Keep in mind that friends and family may be a valuable resource if they have seen a gastroenterologist in the past.
You should also feel comfortable asking a gastroenterologist for his or her credentials. Most will be happy to discuss their training and experience with you. Finally, keep in mind that the most important opinion is your own. Choose a gastroenterologist who has a professional manner, approaches your problems in a systematic way, listens to your concerns, answers your questions in a way that you can understand and makes you feel comfortable.
