Gallbladder Out, Pain ReturnsBy:
I had gallstones six months ago and had my gallbladder removed. Since then, I have had the exact pain that sent me to the emergency room then, several times. Could there be more stones? And where?
Shelly
The major problems after gallbladder surgery are rare. It is possible that there are more stones, either in the common bile duct or more rarely in the hepatic ducts (ducts within the liver). There is also a small possibility that your pain is coming from what is called biliary dyskinesia (spasm of the sphincter at the end of the common duct). After six months, it seems late for your pain to be a complication of surgery, but it is remotely possible. You will need to see your doctor to have tests to look for stones in the duct.
It is also possible that your original pain was not due to your gallstones but to some other cause. If that's so, then removing the gallbladder would not have eliminated the pain. You will need to talk with your doctor to determine whether there is another explanation for your pain.
