People taking certain medications may be advised to use caution when using glucosamine and/or chondroitin as complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) therapies.
Chondroitin has a chemical composition similar to anticoagulant medication. This supplement could also theoretically increase the risk of bleeding if taken with other drugs or supplements that increase the risk of bleeding, including aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antiplatelets, according to the Natural Standard Research Collaboration (NSRC).
Glucosamine, in theory, could decrease the effectiveness of insulin or other diabetes drugs. Limited evidence suggests that taking glucosamine with diuretics might increase the risk of glucosamine’s side effects.
People taking these medications should consult their physician before using these supplements. |
