Glucose CenterThe body's main source of energy is a simple sugar called glucose. People get glucose by eating carbohydrates in foods. After a meal the amount of glucose in the bloodstream rises. The pancreas responds by secreting a hormone called insulin to bring the glucose for the cells to use. Lack of insulin causes glucose to build up in the bloodstream, resulting in diabetes.
