My mom lives by herself and is having trouble getting to the bathroom fast enough. How can I keep her independent?

Remember that a thorough evaluation is needed to confirm the best therapy. Transient causes must also be ruled out. We need to confirm that there is no severe constipation, or infection of the urinary tract or bladder. Medications to help with urgency and frequency may be warranted.

Sometimes environmental factors need to be altered as well. For example, a patient with poor dexterity may need to alter their clothing so that it is easier to remove. A bedside commode may prevent incontinence as well as a fall while trying to navigate to the toilet in the middle of the night. If nighttime urination is a problem, simple things such as evening fluid restrictions and elevating the legs in the evening can help.
