How should I mention my "leaking problem" to my doctor? What if he or she dismisses by concerns?

Tell your doctor or other health care provider up front in the visit that you have been experiencing leakage of urine, and that you would like further evaluation and treatment. Do not wait for him or her to ask you! Studies have shown that primary care providers in particular often overlook asking women about incontinence symptoms. If they dismiss your concerns, bring it up to your gynecologist, or find another provider in your area.

Providers who specialize in incontinence include urologists, gynecologists, geriatricians, and specialized nurses and physical therapists. You can look up providers in your area through websites for specialty societies:

American Urological Association;

Society for Female Urology and Urodynamics;

American Urogynecological Association;

American Geriatrics Society;

Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Association;

Society for Urologic Nurses and Associates;

American Physical Therapy Association

and continence organizations such as the

Simon Foundation for Continence, and the

National Association for Continence
