Heartburn from Exercise

By:
Philip Katz

Question :

Why do I get heartburn after doing aerobics? I bought a trampoline and love doing aerobics on it, but immediately after exercising I get heartburn! I have a hiatal hernia, but I normally control it with diet and Pepcid prescribed by doctor.

Mary

Answer :

We are not sure why, but exercise like running, heavy aerobics or even weightlifting may cause heartburn. While we are not certain of the reason, it is possible that the jarring caused by running or jumping changes the pressure relationship between the abdomen and chest; this might encourage the lower esophageal sphincter to open when it shouldn't, allowing reflux to occur.

Pepcid and drugs like it are extremely safe when used as directed. You might consider taking your Pepcid about an hour before you get on the trampoline or do aerobics. If your symptoms become more frequent or not easily relieved, see your doctor. In any case, the hiatal hernia is not the cause of your problem and does not require treatment.
