Questions for your doctor regarding hemophilia

Preparing questions in advance can help patients to have more meaningful discussions with their physicians regarding their conditions. Patients and parents may wish to ask their doctor the following questions about hemophilia:

  1. Does my family history place me at higher risk for having a child with hemophilia?

  2. If I have hemophilia, what are the chances my child will be born with it?

  3. What type of tests can I have in utero to determine if my child wil have hemophilia?

  4. What signs should I look for that might indicate hemophilia in my child?

  5. How will I know if bleeding is normal or more severe?

  6. What tests can diagnose hemophilia in my child and how soon should they be done?

  7. How should I monitor my child for potential internal bleeding?

  8. What are my/my child’s treatment options?

  9. What are the risks or side effects of such treatments?

  10. Are there methods of delivering these treatments that do not involve injections?

  11. What activities should I/my child avoid?

  12. What first aid steps should be taken if I/my child is cut or injured? What signs indicated a medical emergency?

  13. What lifestyle changes are necessary for me or my child?

  14. Can you recommend a hemophilia support group?
