Hepatitis B & Fertility

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I am 30, and my husband and I are planning to start a family within a year or two. My husband is a carrier of hepatitis B, and while I have immunity through vaccination, I am concerned that the viral load in his semen may create conception difficulties -- for example, by my immune system attacking it. I would also greatly appreciate any other advice you have on this subject.

Asha

Answer :

I will assume that you not only have been vaccinated for hepatitis B, but that you also have your antibody level monitored. If you have a sufficient antibody titer against hepatitis B virus, the risk that you would contract hepatitis would be quite low. However, it is impossible for a physician to predict just how low. Luckily, your body's defenses against the hepatitis virus particles will not hamper your attempts at conception by interfering with sperm function.
