Herbal Cures: Body OdorMost remedies for body odor strive to mask odor, limit sweating, and protect the skin from bacteria-friendly moisture. Although sweat itself does not smell, sweat produced by the apocrine glands--located in the armpits and the breast and genital areas--emits protein and fatty materials that foster odor-causing bacteria. Washing with deodorant soaps removes nearly all bacteria from the skin. Antiperspirants and deodorants are effective, too, but can irritate the underarms. You can try dusting baking soda or cornstarch on the offending areas. Both powders absorb moisture, but neither is an antiperspirant. Baking soda is mildly antiseptic and fights odor. Like bacteria, food can affect your scent: Avoid garlic, onions, and fish and eat more leafy greens and foods that contain zinc. Excessive sweating, chemical imbalances, and serious internal diseases can also produce body odor. If you suspect an odor-causing disorder, see your doctor. Herbal Remedies Sage This herb is a popular all-natural antiperspirant. Sage oil, tincture, and tea bags are available. Apply the tincture or diluted oil directly to sweaty areas, except the face and genitals. You can also drink the tea or use it as a wash. Pregnant women should not take the tea or tincture internally. Tea tree oil This cinnamon-scented oil comes from Melaleuca alternifolia, an Australian tree. Apply directly to the offending areas. The oil is mildly antiseptic and deodorizing but may cause dermatitis.
