Herbal Cures: Dry SkinOccasionally dry or itchy skin is associated with a serious disease; if the condition persists, see a doctor. More often, however, it indicates that the skin's sebaceous (oil) glands have been outmatched by nature's onslaughts--glaring sun, harsh winds, cold winter weather--as well as today's dry indoor heat. All of these exact a higher toll as we age and our sebaceous glands become less active. Herbal Remedies Aloe vera The fresh gel of aloe vera contains a high level of malic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid valued for its anti-wrinkle effect. To obtain the gel, cut off a leaf at the fleshy base and split it open with a knife. Scrape out the gel with a spoon, taking care not to rupture the green rind. Cocoa butter Cocoa butter is the fat extracted from roasted cocoa, or cacao, beans. The white waxy material can be applied to dry skin as needed; it melts on contact to soothe and protect. Cocoa butter is available in stick form. Avocado facial The oil in avocados acts as an emollient. Avocado also contains beneficial vitamin E. To treat dry facial skin, puree the pulp and pat it on the face as a mask. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. Or try iVillage's recipe for at-home avocado skin therapy.
