Herbal Cures: Fever

A fever is defined as a body temperature over 98.6oF (37oC). It is often associated with sweating, shivering, thirst, and a rapid pulse. Bacterial or viral infections, such as tonsillitis or the flu, are usually the cause.

When white blood cells flock to the body's defense, they release proteins called pyrogens. These instruct the brain to raise the body's temperature in order to kill the offending microorganisms. If a fever lasts longer than three days, rises above 103oF, or is accompanied by a severe headache with stiff neck, a productive cough, abdominal pain, or painful urination, see a doctor. Also consult a doctor for fever in babies under six months old or in the elderly.

The best course of action against a fever is to cover yourself with a light blanket, drink cool liquids, and use a cool (not cold) compress. If they choose, adults may take aspirin or acetaminophen. Never give aspirin to a child with a fever, as it may increase the risk of a serious neurological illness called Reye's syndrome.

Herbal Remedies

Elder flower A hot cup of tea made from elder flowers is thought to promote sweating, which helps lower body temperature -- although the effect may simply be due to the hot water. To make the tea, steep 1 to 2 teaspoons dried flowers in 1 cup boiling water, then strain. Drink one or two cups two to three times a day. Tea bags are available commercially.
