Herbal Cures: Hangover

Clearly, temperance in drinking or abstinence is the best method of prevention. And while rates of alcohol metabolism vary somewhat from beverage to beverage, choosing beer or wine over bourbon or brandy is less important than eating food, which will delay absorption of alcohol and result in lower levels in the blood.

Herbal Remedies

Fruit juice Rich in the simple sugar called fructose, fruit juices help give the body a much needed boost of energy in the form of converted glucose. As an alternative, take several fructose tablets, which are available at supermarkets.

Kudzu A traditional Chinese treatment to reduce the craving for alcohol, kudzu is available as an extract. Mix 30 to 40 drops in 11/2 cups water. Take once before rising and every 3 to 4 hours later--up to four times daily if symptoms persist.

Goldenseal It contains berberine, shown to stimulate the secretion of bile in humans, which may ease the liver's job. Mix 5 to 10 drops extract or tincture with 8 ounces water.

Tip: The Bartender Was Wrong

Drinking more alcohol (the proverbial "hair of the dog") the "morning after" will provide only a temporary sedative effect-- and prolong the hangover.
