Herbal Cures: Heat Rash

When sweat remains unevaporated and the skin's pores become blocked, heat rash is likely to develop. The irritating rash, also known as prickly heat and medically as miliaria, is characterized by tiny, itchy red splotches, inflamed skin, and miniature blisters. While folk remedies aim to soothe the skin, absorb moisture, and inhibit infection, the best treatment may simply be cool showers and plenty of air.

Herbal Remedies

Yellow dock To make a cleansing and itch-relieving wash, boil 4 ounces minced fresh root in 2 cups water for 10 minutes. Strain, let cool, and apply several times a day. The wash may irritate tender skin; discontinue use if irritation persists. Aloe vera Carefully slice open the inner portion of the fleshy leaf and scrape out the mucilaginous gel. Apply the gel to the affected skin two to three times a day. Wash the skin before reapplying.

Cornstarch Dust the affected area liberally. The powder will absorb moisture. Do not get in the eyes, ears, or mouth. Rinse the skin every few hours and reapply.
