Herbal Cures: HiccupsHiccups are usually harmless. However, in rare cases they can last for days, making it difficult to eat or sleep. If this occurs, see a doctor: a serious condition may be the cause. Many homespun hiccup "cures" may have some merit. Holding one's breath or breathing into a paper bag prompts the diaphragm to contract more deeply in order to bring in more oxygen, which may interrupt the spasms. So may taking a sudden deep breath as if startled. Other folk remedies may work by irritating the phrenic nerves, which extend from the neck to the chest. These nerves are responsible for the normal contractions of the diaphragm; when one of them is irritated, it causes spasms of the diaphragm, which in turn cause hiccups. Further irritation, such as eating sugar or mustard or drinking vinegar or pineapple juice, may jolt the nerve back into its normal state. Moreover, the act of swallowing opens the glottis and may help stop the hiccups. Herbal Remedy Dill or peppermint Pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 teaspoons minced dill or peppermint leaves. Steep for 10 minutes, then drink slowly. Both herbs act as antispasmodics, and the simple act of swallowing the tea may also help stop the hiccups.
