Herbal Cures: Ingrown ToenailThe condition known as ingrown toenail results when one edge or both edges of the nail--most often, that of the big toe-- press into the adjacent skin, causing inflammation, redness, and possibly infection. The painful affliction is usually caused by nails that are unnaturally curved or cut incorrectly. Tight fitting shoes can also be at fault, while poor personal hygiene can increase the risk of infection. If a toenail is only slightly ingrown, soak the toe in warm water to soften the nail, then trim the excess and put a tiny piece of sterile cotton under the edge to lift it. Change the cotton daily until the nail grows out. You can also soak the affected toe in warm water and Epsom salt. A 10-minute soak twice a day will relieve the pain and reduce the inflammation of an ingrown toenail. If the toe is swollen or there is a discharge of pus, see your doctor. If you have diabetes or circulatory problems, don't treat an ingrown toenail yourself; see a podiatrist or your doctor. Herbal Remedies Bromelain Apply a commercial ointment containing bromelain to the affected area to reduce inflammation. In some people, skin sensitization may occur after using bromelain. Yarrow Crush yarrow flowers or leaves and put them on the skin around the toenail to prevent or reduce infection. Ointments containing yarrow are also available. Yarrow can cause dermatitis in some people.
