Herbal Cures: Motion Sickness

Caused by constant movement, motion sickness begins in the organ of balance within the inner ear, which sends signals to the vomiting center in the brain stem. It can also be triggered by signals originating in the digestive tract. Drugs that suppress vomiting, called antiemetics, usually function by blocking these signals. Antihistamine drugs, such as Dramamine and Bonine, appear to block the signals and may also reduce the sensitivity of the vomiting center. Anticholinergics (drugs that suppress the parasympathetic nervous system), such as atropine, are also effective. However, many of these medications cause side effects, including drowsiness, dry mouth, sweating, and blurred vision. They should not be used during pregnancy.

To try to prevent motion sickness, sit near a window if possible, and focus on a point on the horizon. Do not sit in the rear of airplanes. At sea, stay amidships and above deck. Above all, keep yourself mentally busy. Studies have shown that those who keep their minds off their stomachs tend to get sick less often. Finally, avoid traveling on an empty stomach.

Herbal Remedy

Ginger This is the best-studied herbal remedy for motion sickness. Take 1 gram in capsule form at least 30 minutes before travel and 1/2 to 1 gram more every 4 hours as symptoms occur. Do not exceed 2 to 4 grams in one day. Ginger is also available in the form of ginger candy. Large doses may cause stomach upset. Ginger is not recommended for those with gallstones.
